Forum is open for business!

There was an enthusiastic response to the first meeting of Grangetown’s business forum, which took place at Tramshed Tech.

We were delighted to welcome a range of local businesses – from those established 30 years to those who have only recently started up.

They included food businesses, picture framers, a delicatessen, convenience store/off licence, second hand shop to businesses run from home, a web developer and a plasterer.

We also had members of Grangetown youth forum interested in how to set up future enterprises, with interests from gaming to clothing brands.

The evening was hosted by Cardiff University’s Community Gateway and Grangetown Community Action, who helped set up the forum as part of a wider shop local initiative.

It included a great session from Sam Roads of Google #DigitalGarage about the fundamentals about getting small  businesses online. (Free training is available in their pop-up space at Tramshed until March)

Business coach Rob Firth has also agreed to support the project and facilitated a discussion on what we like about Grangetown – and some of the challenges we face in the area!

Issues of concern ranged from rents and business rates, to litter and parking, empty shops, as well as challenging negative images about Grangetown.

But there was an agreement that Grangetown was friendly, a welcoming and diverse community, with green spaces and things to do.

Then Rob led a discussion on what local business people want to see from the forum in future – and these included practical sessions on marketing, growing and improving businesses, as well has hearing from local council officials on issues like waste management, traffic and parking.

Cardiff Business School is also on tap to provide support and expertise as required.

Businesses who want to send details/biogs to be included here on lovegrangetown.biz should email grangetowncardiff@yahoo.co.uk.

TramshedTech is also running a lovely ongoing Humans of Grangetown feature online which is always looking for new businesses to feature.

TramshedTech has kindly offered to host the next Grangetown Business Forum meeting too, which will be on Monday 27th February (6.30pm-8.30pm) which will include a look at business marketing. More details to follow. New people welcome!
